The Art Of Shelley Cassidy
Artist Shelley Cassidy was born in London, and currently divides her time between the UK and Los Angeles.
A compulsive Urban Sketcher, Cassidy considers herself a storyteller. Attracted by life’s dramas, the spaces where stories spill across a table, a suggestion, a moment on a train, a bar, a street. She manages to work unobserved, sketching what intrigues her. Her cast of characters have been discovered on the streets of Paris, a beach in Portugal, over dinner in Budapest, Bridgetown in Barbados, and a particular favourite, a cockney couple on a bus in Chelsea. The most current series has been a lighter and somewhat brighter in content. Although what comes next is largely hinged upon a moment that she hasn’t happened upon yet. She is currently working on a Mural commission for the Iconic Melrose Trading Post.
Which celebrates it’s twentieth anniversairy in October. Her clients for Murals and paintings include Melissa McCarthy, Petit Ermitage, LAX, Trader Joe’s, Sony Pictures, CBS, and countelss private commissions. She has been Featured in the Los Angeles Times, and appeared on the television show, Clean House. She has exhibited in both solo and group shows at London’s Fairfax Gallery in Chelsea, the Pasinetti House in Beverly Hills, Digital Domain, and Monet’s Gardens.
Cassidy works mostly in mixed media; her observations are captured in watercolour, inks, markers and wax crayons. Often these pieces are revised and revisited in oils or Acrylics.
In between commissions Cassidy has started to explore Los Angeles again and has found a new connection with the landscape. Particularly drawn to the Jacaranda trees that literally explode across Los Angeles in May. For her she considers this city that is built on hillsides with its’ captivating views, a new inspiration for her art.
For several years Cassidy was an oil painter. While spending a couple of years in London and in many ways rediscovering the city of her birth, she began to sketch compulsively. It was during this period that she became intrigued with white space, and the authenticity of drawing from life. This practice has informed her new style and in many ways enhanced her life. She feels very privileged to be able to pursue her artistic journey and when available the Artist loves to teach.
