Peddling Through Sonoma: Best Places for Bike Rides
Some people simply seem to live their lives up on two wheels. Bicycling is a way of life for the most fervent of enthusiasts, and seeking the most scenic courses to cruise through is a constant quest. Fortunately, in this part of California, the countryside is very rewarding, indeed. There’s a whole bunch of great bike trails in the Sonoma area that will delight both casual riders and the most devoted aficionados alike. Think hilly pastures splashed in pastels of green, orange and yellow as if you were sojourning through a Van Gough Painting or some lost Tuscan countryside. Splashed with sun and blessed with mild weather, trying a few of these routes will make you fall in love with what you see as the wind whips over you.
Wheeling Through History
In the city of Sonoma proper, there are plenty of historical sites to see. Most folks will see them on foot, but if you’re looking for a great bike path, why not whiz by them on your seat? The Sonoma Bike Path is seven miles of flat, paved, easygoing fun that cuts through the main part of town. You’ll breeze through favorite local attractions such as the Sonoma Barracks, the Mission San Francisco Solano and plenty of other old preserved structures. All along the way, you’ll find great choices for a quick bite or refreshment and, of course — a little wine tasting too! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours getting the lay of the land.
There’s an area close to Sonoma with a name so enigmatic you almost can’t help but see it for yourself. The Valley of the Moon is known for a lovely tangle of backroads with low traffic and lots of wonderful bucolic countryside to feast your eyes. Most of it is just as easygoing as the Sonoma Bike Path but expect a few spots to be a little more challenging. Forks in the road will take you past vineyards, farmhouses and equestrian zones, so don’t be surprised if you’re sharing some time with hoofed friends as well! Routes can take you through a few state parks, giving you an even greater sense of being away from it all among loads of trees and fairytale landscapes. It’s truly a picture book experience that you will not soon forget.
Something to Wine About
Lest we forget, Sonoma is in the heart of California wine country. There are literally dozens of venerable estates dotting the countryside all around the city. Planning routes to vineyards takes a little time to do properly, but can end in lovely jaunts through the postcard-perfect countryside and end with you licking your lips to some delicious vintages. Even the legendary city of Napa is within biking distance. Plan to bring along a picnic as you will find loads of pretty spots to settle down. Or just explore the wooded roads, which end up with a repast awaiting you on the other side!
