Family Style: Exploring the Rancho Mirage Area with the Kids
After all, the main allure is about getting away from it all, leaving the job behind and letting your hair down. And the sizable traditional senior community comes to mind as well. So many beautiful golf courses throughout the area! But the truth of the matter is far different from this image.
There are in fact quite a few things to do in the Rancho Mirage area for the whole family to enjoy. And you may be surprised by some of them. There are many outdoor areas to discover out here in the desert environment for intrepid explorers. Animal adventures await for children wanting to connect with their non-human pals. Looking to get into some air conditioning? Plenty of indoor destinations are available to offer diversion and delight to the younger crowd. It’s time to take the kids by the hand and lead them to some awesome stuff to do. Here are just a few ways that the whole family can enjoy some time in Rancho Mirage and the surrounding region.
Where the Desert Comes Alive!
Imagine a place where a garden grows all sorts of flowers and plants. And now imagine this place simply loaded with animals from all over the world. Imagine no more! Welcome to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. This magical destination is part zoo, part botanical gardens and all family fun. This is a place to see big cats like the cheetah and amur leopard. Butterflies and hummingbirds are collected to enjoy the natural fluttering of their wings. Porcupines, foxes, lizards, gazelles, warthogs – plenty of variety for fans of just about any species.
But why merely watch when you can get up close and personal? The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has some amazing interactive options you will never forget. There’s a lofty perch from which you can actually hand feed a giraffe. Camel caravans stand as desert sentinels welcoming the touch of human visitors. A petting corral full of goats allows for an exchange that will give everybody the warm fuzzies. And beyond the animals, there are more incredible diversions: a carousel, a model train and even a behind the scenes tour can be arranged. This one’s a real crowd pleaser!
Getting Out There
The desert environment around the Rancho Mirage area is a natural wonderland to be explored and enjoyed. There are many ways to venture into the wilds just beyond the reach of city limits. For those interested in taking a family hike, head on over to Tahquitz Canyon. This is a two-mile loop with opportunities for wildlife spotting and an incredible site - Tahquitz Falls. Yes, a waterfall in the desert, right along the Tahquitz River. Need more space and more waterfalls? Then try out the 60 miles of trails over at Indian Canyons. Varying trails can take you past rare trees, unusual rock formations and more.
But not everyone is up for hiking. Fortunately, there is more than one way to see the desert. Starting on high, hot air balloon tours can offer views from the heavens. A little closer to the ground is an aerial tramway, pulling you and your gang along a stretch of valley. Back down to earth, jeep tours take you off-roading to spots most folks would have to walk hours to get to. And if you prefer four hooves to four-wheeling, seek out some of the horseback riding opportunities on offer in the area.
After a while, we won’t blame you or the kids for needing some time out of the sun. Fortunately, there are many great options. One option is an educational museum, some of which offer incredible interactive installations (you can even find dinosaurs out there!). And if you really need to cool off, there are many water activities including pools, lazy rivers and water parks to choose from. Of course, there are also shopping areas to sample with a mix of products appealing to all ages. Or maybe find some time to chow down in one of the many eateries in the area, most featuring great choices on their kids’ menus!
