Memorable Vacations: Fun for the Entire Family in Del Mar
The fact is that a family is made up of people who are vastly different in age, personality, likes and dislikes. It may be a challenge to find something that everyone will enjoy. So here are a few family-friendly activities in Del Mar that are sure to be a hit.
Enjoy Some Family Beach Time
What could be better than spending the day in the warm California sunshine, splashing in the surf and making sandcastles? Del Mar has four great beaches that cover the area from Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve all the way to Solana Beach.
Spend Some Time at a Seaside Park
If you love the ocean but the very thought of packing up beach toys, chairs, towels and then cleaning everything up at the end leaves you exhausted, Powerhouse Park is the perfect place for you. It has a large grassy lawn, walking paths, picnic tables and a playground for kids, and everything overlooks the beach and ocean.
Take a Surf Lesson
The California coast is legendary for its great surfing, so it’s a perfect place to learn if you’ve never done it before. Various businesses provide private and semi-private lessons, and instructors can tailor the instruction for every age and ability.
Take a Hike
The mountains and bluffs of San Diego County provide endless opportunities for hiking and soaking in the great outdoors. Various parks and natural areas are home to countless trails that the whole family will have fun exploring. Here are a few great places to check out:
• Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a 2,000-acre area with miles of trails that wind through untouched wilderness. The landscape and scenery are nothing short of spectacular, and you might spot some of the local wildlife along the way.
• Scripps Bluff Reserve, referred to above, is a short trail to the top of a bluff that has panoramic views of Del Mar, lagoons, beaches and the Pacific. Return at sunset for one of the best vantage points in the entire area.
• Crest Canyon Park features an easy 2.5-mile loop trail that meanders through coastal sage scrub, chaparral, wildflowers and rare Torrey pine trees.
Family Fun at the Fair
The San Diego County Fair is held every year in June/early July, and there is plenty to do for a whole day of family fun. Animal shows, car shows, rides, food, concerts, talent shows, exhibits, cooking demonstrations and so much more will keep you and your kids smiling from ear to ear. The fair takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Jimmy Durante Boulevard just north of the San Dieguito River.
Try Your Hand at Mini Golf
Golf is big in California. But if the kids are still too young to clutch a driver and whack the ball 200 yards straight down the fairway, you can try your skills at one of Del Mar’s two 18-hole mini-golf courses. One features sculptures of sea creatures such as sharks, dolphins and whales, while the other shines the spotlight on surfing – with one hole taking you right through the barrel of a wave.
Visit a Bird Sanctuary
Located just south of the fairgrounds, the Free Flight Bird Sanctuary looks after birds that are being transitioned between owners. The birds love interacting with people, and your kids will have a rare opportunity to see these beautiful and curious creatures up close.
