Just like the name says in Spanish, Del Mar is “of the sea,” a beach town with its shoreline culture written right into its very nomenclature.
Whether one is coming for a swim in the ocean, to do some serious surfing, hiking, ballooning, or maybe just to explore the local foodie culture and wonderful farmer’s markets, this is a place geared for amazing outdoor adventure and fun. This tiny but close community of about 4,500 lies almost exactly in the middle of San Diego County, about 15 miles north of the city of San Diego. While most of the best activities involve being outside, antique shows and county fairs are featured – be sure to check local calendars. Among the best attractions in the area: Torre Pines Natural State Reserve, Powerhouse Park & Beach, Del Mar North Beach, Seagrove Park, San Elijo Trail, and the Coast to Crest Trail. Nearby communities of interest include San Diego, Escondido, Encinitas, and Carlsbad.
