Just down the road from the far larger and more frequented Cancún lies Playa del Carmen, or “the PDC,” as the locals call it.
The beachfront here is loaded with all manner of watersports to indulge in. Nearby archeological sites offer a more sublime diversion and an opportunity for solemn reflection. Or you can take a dip in one of the many nearby mysterious cenotes, freshwater cave pools that dot the nearby Yucatán jungle.
Smaller than Cancún, its resort counterpart to the north, Playa del Carmen is still a large city with a population of about 250,000. Besides all the snorkeling, SCUBA and fishing available in these parts, land lovers have plenty to explore as well. Try out the Calle 12 neighborhood if you’re looking for the heart of the local nightlife. Quinta Avenida (a.k.a. Fifth Avenue) has a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare with plenty of great shopping and quality eateries. Centro is a great spot if you’re into boutiques. And the beaches of Playacar just can’t be
